194th Royal Hibernian Academy Annual Open 2024

Luminous seeds photo by Bob Tait

The RHA Annual Open is now open and running until 4th August 2024. See below a little explanation of my work –

“Luminous Seeds” 174x 50x 50cm

36 lines of individual porcelain pieces hanging via fishing line and hooks from an acrylic disc.

Watch closely as this piece changes when people draw near. Even when it appears still, observe the subtle micro-movements, the porcelain pieces move in the air, almost as if they possess a quiet life force.

The flower seed head at the heart of this piece is the Physalis Alkekengi, commonly known as Chinese Lantern. Encased in multiple layers of porcelain clay, the plant matter burns away, leaving behind a delicate porcelain shell. These porcelain seeds cradle the magic of life and growth.

The gold glazing, like energy or life force, rises through the plant. It hides within the seeds, sometimes visible, other times concealed with the promise of new beginnings..

As a child, I loved growing plants. I recall feeling the dryness of a neglected one, and the thrill as it responded to water-the leaves shifting, the roots visibly twitching. It fascinated me then, and it still does.

Now, look down below. The “roots” of the luminous seeds extend into the mirror. Look over the edge, and perhaps you’ll feel that tingle in your stomach as you look down..

Thanks to Photographer Bob Tait for some really amazing photos.

I hope people enjoy seeing the work in person, there is nothing like experiencing work and really looking.
